The town of Almeida is a municipal centre and is located on a plateau, called Planalto das Mesas (Plateau of the Tables), 2.5km from the right bank of the river Côa and around 7km from the border with Spain.

The municipality of Almeida comprises 29 parishes and is home to a uniquely rich historical heritage, centred around three historical centres – the medieval villages of Castelo de Mendo and Castelo Bom and the historical centre of the town of Almeida, marked by the presence of its bulwarked military fortifications.

The municipality is served by the Beira Alta Railway and by the IP5 motorway, the recent building of which has completely transformed the town’s links to the rest of the country.  This motorway has two junctions which provide access to the municipality, one via National Highway 324, and the other in Vilar Formoso.
